Club Reviews: Monte Cristo

Night Clubs in Los Angeles

Monte Cristo is one of the most popular alternative (read: gothic) venues in Los Angeles, and hosts a wide variety of regular parties each week, ranging from an 80’s night called Club 1984 (don’t be expecting top 40, though!) through to the Malediction Society, which plays the most eclectic industrial that can be found today. There are some great consistencies throughout every event, naturally. The club’s sound system is pretty solid, nothing to write home about but definitely up to the task, and the drinks are moderately priced, although keep your orders simple for speed’s sake, and to keep the bartenders coming back to you. Cover is only $5 before 10:30 PM, which can make for a pretty cheap night that isn’t short on fun, although this will be more likely $10 if there is a special guest.  There’s a decent amount of seating inside, as well as an outdoor patio for smokers – and yes we mean for smokers – don’t expect to get a single breath of fresh air, it’s solid smoke.

There’s one last item that deserves special mention, since it’s pretty unique, even for the LA club scene – there is an absinthe bar in the club, complete with an Absinthe Fairy to make all your wormwood-induced dreams come true. This was the one thing that really clinched Monte Cristo on our list, and once you visit, you’ll see why!

Finally if you do decide to check it out, keep in mind that this is a goth club. Expect a lot of black and spikes and makeup, industrial and darkwave and other similar 80s music, which makes for a great atmosphere and ambience, if you know what you’re getting into. If you arrive at the club and all you know is the typical glitzy hip-hop club, you’re going to be disappointed. But if that’s you, why not try busting out your slinkiest black and walking on the wild side for a night? No matter what night you choose, Monte Cristo is the place.

Club Reviews: Vanguard

Club Review: Vanguard Vanguard is one of the hottest clubs in LA at the moment, and with good reason. Located right in Hollywood at 6021 Hollywood Boulevard, it’s got a great vibe for the house music lover. Famous DJs spin there regularly, most recently Mauro Picotto for Departure Finale. The club is absolutely huge, featuring multiple levels, multiple bars, and a spacious (okay, gigantic!) outdoor patio for smokers and those who need a cooldown after dancing their asses off. It’s not exactly the cleanest club in LA, but there is always a tradeoff – it’s hard to keep such a huge and popular place spotless all the time!

Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the most popular nights, but the club is great all week long, and often features special events, such as Bockfest recently as well as regular fashion shows. The sound system is excellent, which is crucial for house music, and makes the dancing that much better. The dress code is fairly lenient, but don’t expect to get in wearing just anything – or if you do, watch out, as you might not give off the right image. The drinks are a bit on the pricy side, but it’s worth it since they’re stiff – and they get everyone dancing!

One thing to keep in mind is not to bother joining the VIP list, as you’ll be paying extra for being treated just like everyone else in the place – the VIP area is right down on the floor with the non-specials. Cover is pretty  cheap anyways, usually on $15 all night unless there is a special headliner.

Sadly, Vanguard’s most famous party series, Deep, is now over – but can be sure that Vanguard and its gorgeous sound system will be bringing something new to the dance floor as soon as the mourning period is over – or at least the hangover.

Safe Practices For Enjoying LA’s Nightlife

Nightclub Los AngelesTraveling to Los Angeles is a great experience. Day and night Los Angeles is often a lively place, full of activities for all to experience. Los Angeles features a fantastic night life, there are numerous clubs and bars that make Los Angeles a perfect destination to party during the night. If you are not familiar with Los Angeles, or for anybody who is just visiting for a few days and you’d enjoy spending a night bar hopping or doing several other nightly activities, there are many aspects to consider.
Make sure to be acquainted with which parts of Los Angeles are thought risky. Oftentimes city lines are widely recognized by the local people, so check out online forums and online websites to best inform you of the spots to not visit after the daylight hours. Know all the possible contact numbers you might need to call in an emergency. If you are visiting Los Angeles all on your own and you wish to go out at nighttime ensure that someone at home is aware of your plans and you also may wish to allow them to communicate with you by carrying a cellphone.

Some people’s ideas of safety measures are vastly different depending on the gender of the individual in question, but I feel overall common sense and playing it safe is good advice for any individual. Don’t drink drinks that a stranger hands you, be sure the bartender opens bottles in front of you, don’t go home with someone you don’t know, don’t start fights, etc. Overall Los Angeles is an excellent destination to party, just use common sense while you are out and about.
